Follow Your Intuition No Matter What
We all have these two distinct sides of ourselves that often compete with each other.
For example, I have two distinct sides to me: (1) the extremely logical side, and (2) the emotional/intuitive one (note that I didn’t say “extremely” on the latter).
While I have spent most of my life letting my logical side be in the driver’s seat, I have had to learn force it into the passenger seat…and sometimes even completely out of the car so my intuitive side can drive.
It’s not easy.
And I still struggle with it.
The Importance Of Intuition
There have been plenty of times in my life when my logical side trumped my intuition, and it did not serve me very well.
For example, many years ago, I accepted a marriage proposal that I knew wasn’t right. I even let it progress to a point where it almost felt like there was no turning back. I could literally feel it in my body that it wasn’t the right decision.
But did I ignore it? Yep. My spiritual intuition was screaming at me, and I just turned my back on it and ran away.
I’ve learned to stop doing that.
I haven’t always ignored my intuition. There have been times that I made what seemed like a crazy decision to the rest of the world, but it felt right to me.
And it was right. One of those times was when I quit my first job as a professor in Missouri to move back to Ohio (with no job in sight) to be with the man who later became my husband and the father of my children.
I’m glad I listened to my inner voice then, because then I wouldn’t have my two sons.
Reasons Why You Should Always Follow Your Intuition
1. It’s usually right.
2. It’s usually right.
3. It’s usually right.
Oh, and in case I didn’t say it yet, your intuition is usually right.
That’s not to say that if you don’t follow your intuition that you can’t learn some life lessons the hard way.
That’s my “look on the bright side” interpretation of ignoring your inner knowingness.
But it’s true. I don’t really believe in mistakes or failures anyway, because pretty much everything in life can be a learning experience. You just need to look at it that way.
What did I learn when I didn’t follow my intuition? I learned that, well, I need to follow my intuition. But I also learned other things as well. As for the marriage proposal that my inner voice told me not to accept, I certainly learned a lot about who I am, what works for me, and what doesn’t.
The Takeaway
With that said, I would still advise you to listen to yourself. But if you don’t, at least make sure that you come out of it a better person. Don’t look back and beat yourself up for not following that inner whisper. Just chalk it up to life experience and do it differently next time!
On another note, I would like to invite you to share your story with me! I am working on a book about following your intuition (or not following it) with nationally honored psychologist, Dr. LeslieBeth Wish If you would like to be included in our book, please contact me through my website. Any experience from your life where you did – or did not – follow your intuition would be perfect for the book. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you!
